Amite secured the district championship on Friday by beating archrival St. Helena 50-18 in front of a pack crowd. The Warriors looked very impressive from the opening kickoff scoring 23 unanswered points to start the game & forcing 3 turnovers. Amite quarterback Amani Gilmore *Kentucky commit* was spectacular on the night throwing for 184 yards & 2 touchdowns to go with 141 yards rushing & 2 touchdowns. It was evident that the Warriors had the more talented team on Friday night & they showed all the signs to be ready for a deep playoff run. Amite running back Corey McKnight made his presence known throughout the whole game finishing with a 103 yards rushing & 2 touchdowns. Cam Henderson was a matchup nightmare at receiver finishing with 2 receiving touchdowns & his counterpart Devonta Lee showed his versatility finishing the game with an interception & a rushing touchdown. Amite looks like they have all the tools to be able to win class 2A this season, & I would like to think they will be the favorite going into the playoffs in a few weeks. Seniors Ishmael Sopsher (#1 ranked DT), Devonta Lee (#7 ranked ATH), Amani Gilmore, Cam Henderson, & Kyle Maxwell seem to be laser focused to get a state championship back to Amite, which hasn’t happened since 2004. With the Warriors being one of the most talented teams in the state regardless of class, it’s going to be interesting to see how it all will unfold come playoff time.

4 star defensive back Devin Bush left the University of Virginia throughly impressed after this weekend on his first official visit. Coach Mendenhall & his staff did an outstanding job hosting Bush & his parents throughout the weekend, giving the 4 star prospect a lot to think about going forward. “It felt like home as soon as I got off the plane,” Bush said. “I really enjoyed spending time in the meetings with coach Howell just paying attention to how he moves around & interacts with his players.” With Bush having so many major power 5 offers, many were shocked that Virginia was able to get the talented New Orleans native on campus for an official visit. Virginia has been invading the boot as of late offering some of the state’s premier prospects & spending a lot of time at some of the schools of these prospects. The Louisiana charge is led by coach Ricky Brumfield (New Orleans native) & regional scout Jordan Arcement. “I felt so comfortable with all of the coaches & players that it made me feel like we had been knowing each other,” Bush said. “Me & my parents got to even go ride horses, which was a nice experience. Virginia definitely left a big impression on me & my family. I feel this program has all the tangibles it take to provide me with a great education & put me in position to go to the league.” Virginia made an even better case for themselves after beating #16 ranked Miami on the weekend & improving their record to 4-2 on the season. Bush is set to take his next official visit to the University of Arkansas November 10th when they take on home state school LSU. The Arkansas program has been making a heavy push for the 4 star prospect hoping they can land yet another New Orleans native to their roster. All in all it seems Virginia has a hell of a chance to land Bush, & if they do this could entice University High talented 3 star running back Michael Hollins to commit to the Cavaliers as well. Hollins went on an official visit to Virginia earlier this month & has the Cavalier program as one of his favorites. After visiting the University of Florida this past weekend, Ja'khi Douglas was very impressed with the state of the program & the atmosphere after the Gators took down #5 ranked LSU. In Dan Mullen’s first year as head coach, he has the Gators off to a 5-1 start with wins over two top 25 opponents. Douglas made it known how much he enjoyed himself in Gainesville, but expressed that his recruiting is still wide open. “I really like Florida & the coaches there,” Douglas said. “Both times I went up there, I really enjoyed it. And even though I’m high on Florida, I just want to make it clear that they are not my top school. Me & my family are still going through the process of trying to figure out what schools best fit me.” Douglas is arguably the hottest 2020 athlete in Louisiana when it comes to recruiting. The 4 star prospect currently holds 21 offers from the likes of LSU, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi St, TCU, & a host of others. “I plan to come out with a top 5 in a May,” Douglas said. “I’m looking for a school that’s going to have my major & that uses small shifty receivers like myself. I’ve been paying close attention to the offenses of the schools that’s recruiting me trying to see how I would fit in. I plan to be an early enrollee because I want to play as a true freshman. My dream school since I was a kid is Florida St, so I hope they come around to recruiting me soon before I come out with my top 5.” The home state school LSU seems to be in good position to lure Douglas to Death Valley as well as any school recruiting him. With how LSU’s offense has looked this season, Douglas has been pretty intrigued with how wide open they’ve been in the passing game thus far. “I like how LSU has been throwing it around a lot this season versus how they were in the past,” Douglas said. “I’ve always liked LSU & I’ll continue to keep a close eye on them the rest of the season. Something that will go in LSU’s favor is having 4 star quarterback T.J Finley committed for the 2020 class, who Douglas is very high on. “The first time I saw T.J play I was like man I would love to play with him,” Douglas said. “He can make all the throws on the route tree & I could see us having real good chemistry together. T.J & I have a great relationship & we always chop it up about how it would be if we went to the same college. Every time we see each other since he committed to LSU, he always ask me when am I coming join him to be a Tiger.” Douglas has been stellar in his junior season so far scoring 7 total touchdowns from at receiver, returning kicks, & designed runs plays at quarterback. Douglas has his team off to 6-0 start & they’re currently ranked #4 in 5A. With so many high major schools recruiting Douglas, it’s going to be interesting to see who will land the dynamic playmaker when it’s all said & done. “After September 1st I started receiving a lot of love from schools,” Douglas said. “I’m really thankful to be receiving this kind of attention from so many great programs. I just want to continue to improve as a player so when I do get to college I’ll be ready to come in & contribute early.” At this point Douglas has offers from some of the most premier programs in the country & I think you’ll see this kid pick up even bigger offers going forward. Clemson, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, & Georgia are some schools that are monitoring Douglas hard at the moment. Offers from these schools looked to be on the way by season’s end or by the Spring when colleges really start their evaluation period. The talented wing from Sophie B. Wright out of New Orleans, LA made it official committing to the University of Rhode Island earlier this week. It was a little bit of a shock to most that Hammond chose a school so far from home, but the he expressed how he felt it was the best fit for him going forward. “I chose Rhode Island because I felt the energy as soon as I stepped foot on campus,” Hammond said. “Head Coach David Cox makes you feel really comfortable with him & the relationship we built made me feel like I can trust him. The players embraced me when I was on campus & it made me see myself really playing with them next year.” Hammond had a hell of showing on the Adidas circuit this past summer, which made his stock rise even more to a bevy of schools. The 3 star prospect became even more intriguing to schools after he grew from 6-0 to 6-4 within a year. Hammond committed to the Rams while holding offers from Mississippi St, Ole Miss, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, The University of Louisiana-Lafayette, & a host of others. According to 247 Sports Hammond is ranked the #2 shooting guard in the state behind Rayville’s Mylik Wilson. The 3 star prospect is very athletic, can shoot it well off the dribble, & has deep range which I see really translating to that Atlantic 10 conference in the coming years. “This is a moment I been waiting for since I was a kid,” Hammond said. “Even though playing college basketball was a goal, it’s not going to stop there. I envision myself making it to the NBA & I feel that Rhode Island can help me achieve that.” It’s evident that Hammond has gotten better & better every year, which is why I think he is no where near his ceiling. His ability to be able get to the cup at will & finish over athletic bigs is something you’ll notice early when you watch this kid play. “Over the last year I brought my game to another level,” Hammond said. “A lot of hard work & having a consistent work ethic really contributed to my progression. I have some great coaches that has helped me throughout my development like my dad, coach Jason, coach Newton, coach Charles, & coach Vincent.” It’s no secret that Sophie B. Wright basketball program was a afterthought four years ago, but over the last 3 years things have changed. Just last season the Warriors finished with a 33-6 record & made it to the semifinals before falling short to Peabody. Hammond has played a vital role into this program’s turnaround, and this upcoming season you could very well see the Warriors back in the mix to compete to win a 3A state title. “Sophie B has developed me on the basketball court, but most importantly as a person,” Hammond said. “I spend countless hours in the gym with one of the coaches getting better & they don’t mind coming help any of the players work on their game. Things like being to class on time, making sure we’re in the appropriate uniform, just following school policies are things the coaching staff never let me slack off with. I love everything about Sophie B. Wright & I’m happy I came here for my high school years.” Zachary bounced back from last week’s loss to U-High by beating a undefeated Walker team 38-9. The Broncos took a business like approach to this game holding a very talented Walker offense to just 132 yards of total offense & 4 takeaways on the game. The Broncos offense finished the game with 427 yards of total offense with 127 rushing yards coming from running back Kyle Landry. Keilon Brown had a pretty good showing finishing with 168 yards passing(2 TDs) & 70 yards rushing (1 TD) making things difficult for the Wildcat defense to keep him under control. The Broncos defensive & offensive line play was outstanding on the night & ultimately was the difference in the game. Defensive tackle Caleb Jackson was disruptive all night long for the Broncos getting constant penetration on run plays, which led to why the Wildcats longest run on the night was only 6 yards. Jackson finished the game with 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, & 3 TFLs. Even with the two early losses this season, the Broncos seem to still be a team that can get back to the dome & repeat as 5A state champs. I think it’s safe to say this team won’t lose another game this regular season & should go into the playoffs hitting on all cylinders as a top 5 seed. Michael Corner Jr. made it official this week committing to Southeastern University. The senior wide receiver played a vital role last season in Edna Karr’s state championship title run with 7 receiving touchdowns with many of them coming over the top of a defender’s head. Corner possesses good size at 6-2 & he uses it to his advantage often, which is why Frank Scelfo & his staff made the senior receiver a priority. Corner currently holds offers from New Mexico St, McNeese St, North Texas, Arkansas Pine-Bluff, & Alcorn St. Southeastern stood out from the rest being that they were the first program to offer Corner after his junior year. “Southeastern showed me a lot of love since day one,” Corner said. “The coaching staff text or call me almost everyday & that made me feel comfortable with them. The things they told me with how they can help me not just for football but academically meant a lot to me as well.” The Edna Karr program is consistent at getting wide receivers to the next level & Corner has fell right in line with being the next one up. “It’s wonderful to be going to college for free because opportunities like this don’t happen for everybody,” Corner said. “I worked so hard for moments like this & the Karr program really prepared me for the next level & in life. You have to have a certain type of mindset when you’re working hard everyday. But I learned that if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything you want in life. My teammates played a big role into where I’m at today & that contributed a lot to my success.” It’s no doubt that the Southeastern program is getting a steal & I’m of the mind that Corner would have been highly sought after by bigger programs if he had hit the camp circuit more last summer. The progression that the senior receiver has shown each year since his freshman year has been tremendous. The Karr coaching staff obviously feels that Corner has turned into a big time player by awarding him with the #1 before the start of the season. And if you know the history behind certain numbers at Karr, you’d know being awarded #1 is a big deal in that program. “Man the Karr program has done so much for me since the first day I got on the team,” Corner said. “The program teaches you how to handle real life situations. It’s really a family & the program shows you how to give 110% no matter the circumstances. One of the main things that was taught to me is to be consistent everyday & I will take all of these values with me on the next level.” As crazy as it may seem, Corner’s best football is still ahead of him & I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a household name in that Southland conference in the coming years. |
