The Tigers are coming off of one of the best seasons in the school’s history finishing 11-2 & a trip to the quarterfinals against district foe Destrehan where they came up short losing 31-14. It’s no secret that the Tigers return a bevy of talent & experience. Head coach Gary Hill feels this year’s team could be just as good if not better than last year’s team. “We have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball,” Hill said. “I don’t think the team was too satisfied with losing in the quarterfinals, but they’ve came back hungry & ready to work this summer. We just have to recognized that we have something special here & we can’t get selfish.” Along with the talent that the Tigers have, the hiring of former Vandebilt Catholic head coach Jeremy Atwell will bring a lot of knowledge & experience to this coaching staff. “Getting a coach like Jeremy Atwell is invaluable,” Hill said. “He’s going to be a great asset to not only the coaching staff, but helping mentor our kids to build our program & take another step. He’s done a great job with our quarterbacks in the short time he’s been here & I’m excited about having him apart of this staff.” Senior Ja’Khi Douglas (Florida St commit) will be the focal point on offense at the quarterback position. Look for Douglas to get more time playing receiver this year which is his natural position. Junior Maason Smith will be the man in the middle on the defensive line & be on the lookout for him to play a little tight end as well this season. Smith is also a 5-star & ranked the number one player in the state for the 2021 class. Senior D’Jon Scott will be the leader on the backend at free safety this season. The long rangy Scott will also have some packages where he plays receiver too. Scott holds offers from McNeese St, Southeastern, Lamar, University of Louisiana-Monroe, & Arkansas-Monticello. Senior A.J Walter is a 6-2 receiver that definitely has the tools to make a major impact on offense this season. Walter is a two sport ATH that is committed to Southern for baseball. Senior Jakobe Carter is a returning starter at corner that will play a big role in making the Tigers defense stout once again. Carter holds offers from Austin Peay, Southeastern, Southern Miss, & Air Force. Senior Kwan Allen will be asked to play a lot on both sides of the ball this season at corner & running back. His versatility will be big for the Tigers this season. Allen holds one offer from Grambling St. Senior Jahon Johnson will be one of the Tiger’s biggest playmakers at running back. His speed & homerun threat ability will make this offense very dynamic this season. Sophomore Jaylin Lucas will have a bigger role this season at receiver & for good reason. His ability to make defenders miss in space will set him apart from the rest & he will be a big asset in the return game this season as well. Lucas was clocked at a 4.49 this summer & had really good camp showings at UL, Nicholls St, Southeastern, Lamar, Houston, & Alabama. Sophomore Kaden Lewis will be a very disruptive force on the defensive line this season. Lewis coming out party was against McDonogh 35 in the spring game where he ended the game with 4 TFLs & hardly could be blocked one on one. Lewis also had an outstanding showing at the Alabama camp this past summer. Lewis met with Nick Saban privately after the camp & to let him know they’ll be keeping tabs on him going forward. Sophomore Ryan Williams could be the x-factor when it’s all said & done for this Tigers team at the quarterback position. He can spin it with the best of them, but it’s go take some time to get him acclimated to this new system. When he figures it out this offense will be deadly because they’ll be able to put their athlete Ja’Khi Douglas at his natural position which is receiver.
