The Jungle — In front of a packed and fired-up crowd Friday night, Thibodaux High running back Cemiyen Adams delivered a performance for the ages — rushing for 251 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries — to lift the Tigers to a hard-fought 27–21 win over crosstown rival Terrebonne. The win pushes Thibodaux to 8–1 on the season, while Terrebonne falls to 6–3. “This rivalry means everything to both schools,” said Thibodaux head coach Lowell Narcisse “Cemiyen was phenomenal tonight, but I’m proud of the entire team. We kept our composure, made key stops, and found a way to finish.” First Quarter: Thibodaux Strikes First The Thibodaux defense set the tone early, stuffing Terrebonne on fourth down in Tiger territory to open the game. Moments later, quarterback Damien Robertson connected with Camarii Carto on a 26-yard wheel route for the first score of the night. Adams followed that up with a highlight-reel run — breaking through the line and sprinting 65 yards untouched to make it 14–0 with just under a minute left in the first quarter. Second Quarter: Momentum Swings Back and Forth Adams appeared to score again on a 48-yard burst, but a holding penalty wiped the play away. Terrebonne capitalized soon after, as quarterback Owen Oliver found A’Khiree Parker on a 43-yard touchdown strike to cut the lead to 14–7 with 6:40 left before halftime. Following a muffed kickoff, Terrebonne recovered deep in Thibodaux territory — but the Thibodaux defense came up big again, stopping the Tigers on fourth down for the second time of the night. Adams wasted no time reasserting control, breaking free for a 53-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 21–7 with 2:23 remaining in the second quarter. Oliver and the Terrebonne offense responded before the break, as Alvin Celestin took a short swing pass 14 yards for a score, trimming the deficit to 21–14 at halftime. Third Quarter: Terrebonne Ties It Up Terrebonne carried its momentum into the second half. Oliver connected with TJ Diggs on a deep 54-yard touchdown pass to knot the game at 21–21 with 10:28 left in the third quarter, sending the visiting crowd into a frenzy. But Thibodaux’s defense continued to make timely plays. Braden Arceneaux recovered a key fumble late in the quarter to stall another Terrebonne drive and shift the momentum back in the home team’s favor. Fourth Quarter: Adams Finishes the Job With the game hanging in the balance, Thibodaux turned once again to its workhorse. Adams capped off a physical drive with a 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down, putting Thibodaux ahead 27–21 with 5:12 left to play. The defense sealed the win from there, forcing Terrebonne into late incompletions as the Thibodaux sideline and home crowd erupted in celebration when the clock hit zero. Final Thoughts Adams’ dominant outing not only powered Thibodaux to victory but also solidified his place as one of the top backs in the Bayou Region this season. “Coach told us all week to keep swinging,” Adams said after the game. “I just trusted my line, trusted the play calls, and ran hard every snap. We weren’t leaving here without this win.” Thibodaux (8–1) will look to continue its winning ways next week, while Terrebonne (6–3) will aim to bounce back as playoff positioning heats up across the region. Eighth-grade kicker Ben Trosclair drilled a 22-yard field goal in double overtime to give Covenant Christian Academy a dramatic 21–18 win over previously unbeaten Jeanerette in front of a roaring home crowd. It was a gritty, emotional victory for the Lions, who improved to 6–2 on the season while handing the Tigers their first loss (7–1). “This team never stopped believing,” said CCA head coach Jesse Turner. “We faced adversity all night, but our guys played with heart — and an eighth grader stepped up when it mattered most.” Covenant Christian started fast behind quarterback Owen Trosclair, who connected with Richard Horn on a 13-yard touchdown strike midway through the first quarter. The younger Trosclair then added a 32-yard field goal to give the Lions a 10–0 lead late in the first. But Jeanerette, a powerhouse known for explosive plays, clawed back. A botched snap on a CCA punt rolled into the end zone for a safety, trimming the lead to 10–2 early in the second. Moments later, running back Destin Smith broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run, and after a successful two-point conversion, the Tigers tied the game 10–10 with just over ten minutes to play in the half. Jeanerette’s defense seized momentum when defensive back Nysir Jackson intercepted a pass, setting up another scoring drive. Smith struck again — this time from 25 yards out — to give Jeanerette an 18–10 lead with 2:33 left before halftime. CCA defensive back Patrick Williams picked off a pass before the break to halt another Tigers drive, keeping the Lions within striking distance. In the third quarter, the Lions showed their resilience. Facing fourth down deep in Jeanerette territory, Owen Trosclair broke a tackle and powered into the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown run. His two-point conversion tied the game 18–18 with 1:33 left in the third. The fourth quarter was a battle of nerves. Covenant Christian’s fake punt attempt was stopped with just over a minute remaining, giving Jeanerette a chance to steal the game. But the Lions’ defense rose to the occasion — linebacker Madix Latiolais intercepted a pass with 11 seconds left to send it to overtime. After a scoreless first OT, both teams traded defensive stops in the second. Williams picked off his second pass of the night, setting the stage for the biggest kick of young Ben Trosclair’s life. Calm under pressure, the eighth grader split the uprights from 22 yards out — and the Lions’ sideline erupted in celebration. With the win, Covenant Christian not only snapped Jeanerette’s undefeated streak but also showed they can hang with anyone in Class 1A. “That’s what high school football is all about — heart, belief, and moments like this,” Coach Turner said. “I couldn’t be prouder.” Final: Covenant Christian 21, Jeanerette 18 (2OT) Records: CCA (6–2), Jeanerette (7–1) Full highlights & interviews below!! |
