Seconds later, defensive back Jackson Demouy intercepted another Karr pass; the Bears took their first lead with 12 seconds left in the third quarter. Despite two interceptions, AJ Samuel came through for the second straight week. Throwing 17-30 for 329 yards, the sophomore found the end zone three times throwing & one running. "The two turnovers, he bounced back after knowing that we were going to keep the ball in his hands. When you use the spread offense, you're going to make mistakes," said head coach Brice Brown. "He's a sophomore quarterback; he's going to make mistakes. But I'm really proud of him tonight, that's a signature win for him." Running back Kevin Marigny scored the final points of the game with 9:31 left in the fourth quarter. The Marigny score capped off 80 yards in 10 plays. The Karr defense shutout the Bears for the remainder of the night Catholic's offense was neutralized for most of the night. Quarterback Landon O'Connor threw for 122 yards on 12-25 passing. Karr's defense turned it up a notch when it had to especially late in the fourth quarter. Written by Kyle Valdez The Edna Karr Cougars dominated the first three quarters en route to a 45-20 blowout victory over Warren Easton Saturday night. The annual matchup of Karr versus Easton, now titled the "Don Wattigny Classic," now has the same fate for eight straight meetings: Karr reigning victorious. This year's matchup highlighted a new playmaker under center for Karr. After two years behind Leonard Kelly, AJ Samuels made his debut as a starter. The sophomore threw for 293 yards and four touchdown passes on 15-21 passing. Samuels' first pass of the night was intercepted by Easton's Wallace Foster. Once Karr got back on offense, Samuels dialed in. He found Tank McCath for a 42-yard touchdown pass to get the offense going. Head coach Brice Brown discussed his quarterback's play, "Offensively, I'm happy the way AJ handled the game. He had some mistakes, but he kept poised and maneuvered around in the pocket well. We're going to work on some stuff and clean things up." To begin the second half, Karr defensive end Jonathan Bax returned a fumble 21 yards to stretch the Karr lead to 26-7. The next Karr drive resulted in Samuels finding receiver Destyn Hill for a 6-yard touchdown reception to give Karr a 33-7 lead. Karr had full control of the game by that point. Kevin Marigny, Khamani Simmons, Dany'e Brooks, Chris Vasquez also accounted for touchdowns for the Cougars. Junior Aaron Anderson played a significant role on offense. Just as important as the offense, Karr's defense dictated the flow of the game. Junior linemen Tygee Hill and Troy Morgan were a force all night. Cornerback Destin Refuge intercepted a ball before the half to give the Cougars an additional possession. Karr will have little time ahead of a big Week 2 matchup against Catholic High Baton Rouge.Due to incoming Hurricane Delta, Karr now has just three days between games (opposed to a scheduled four days). Head coach Brice Brown is optimistic about the matchup. "We're not going to go backwards. We're not going to think about losing to Catholic last year. We have a short week, so we're going to celebrate this one tonight, clean some stuff up tomorrow in film. We'll do our regular Monday, and have two days to prepare for Catholic. It's all about execution." Warren Easton will look to rebound against 5A power East Ascension. "We looked like a team that only had shoulder pads on for four or five days, " said Easton head coach Jerry Phillips. "Give us two or three more weeks and we'll be good." They helped me through the game" Holstein said. "With a great line and a running back like Connor [Wisham], it opens up everything for me." Junior Connor Wisham ran for 188 yards on 20 carries for three touchdowns. A complete showing by both teams, Zachary held a lead for the entirety of the tight-fought game. St. Augustine head coach Nick Foster made his head coaching debut after six years under Brice Brown at Edna Karr. "We did some good things… There were things I was pleased with… like the fact that we never gave up when we got down. They came and fought, but there are things we need to correct." Written by Jonrell Jones Ferdinard Young set the tone for West St. John during the first play from the scrimmage by taking it 54 yards for the first score of the game. A misplaced snap, which was also the theme of the night for the Rams, caused the score to be 6-0. The Rams scored in an assortment of ways. The Rams special teams caused Lusher to squander 3 safeties, the first one came on a block punt by 2022 rising junior Kailep Edwards. After the 1st quarter, West St. John led 8-0. The rams opened up the second quarter by forcing another safety, this time the punt sailed over the punters head. A pair of touchdown runs by R’khoby Roberson made the score 22-0 at halftime. West St. John forced a turnover on the opening 2nd half kickoff but failed to turn it into another scoring opportunity by fumbling the ball on the two-yard line. This set up the Rams defense to cause the 3rd safety of the night making the score 24-0. Hamilton once again set the Rams offense up with a great return to Lusher’s 12-yardline. This time the Rams took advantage of the opportunity, setting up a Ferdinard 1-yard touchdown pass to Kaejean Kindrick making the score 30-0 to end the 3rd quarter. Another Ferdinard and Kindrick connection made the score 37-0. The Rams capped the scoring for the night by a 3-yard run by backup quarterback Jaedon Butler made the score 44-0. West St. John was led by a stout defense the whole night. The Rams defense limited Lusher to 37 yards of total offense and 1 first down. The Rams offense totaled 318 of yards. Ferdinard was 6 of 16 for 108 yards. Roberson led the rushing attack with 10 carries for 85 yards. West St. John will play Plaquemine Green devils, while Lusher will play Capitol Lions next week. Standout junior linebacker Kailep Edwards was outstanding as expected for the Rams who finished the night with 6 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 blocked punts & a safety while only playing the first half. "It feels great to be back wit my brothers man I can’t explain it because I thought we wouldn’t have a season until the spring," Edwards said. "When we got the news that we was having a season, we was ready." Edwards is trying his best to help lead his team back to the dome, but he's adamant about getting better every week & holding everybody including himself along the way. "If we keep playing like we did last night we definitely can go far," Edwards said. "We didn’t look this good in practice earlier in the week because it was kind of sloppy. But we came out and punched them in the mouth first. We had some bad penalties tonight that we need to correct. I wasn’t looking for us to come out and look perfect but we definitely have some things to work on." Edwards expressed how he's been well aware of what is going on in the world with the murders of Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake, George Floyd, ect. "My reason for wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt pre-game was behind the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor situation and the others that they are trying to throw under the rug," Edwards said. "I feel like the cops should be responsible for they actions because they are hear to protect and serve. Now everybody scared when they get pulled over because they don’t know if they will make it home." Written by Kyle Valdez The Purple Knights have plenty of playmakers across the field and should be one of many competitive teams in District 9-5A's Catholic League. Foster is entering his first season as a head coach after spending six seasons as an assistant to Brice Brown at Edna Karr. Foster, similar to his time at Karr, will have one of the most talented rosters in the state at his disposal. "St. Aug has always had really good athletes over the years, but now it's just about taking my past experiences & utilizing it the right way to fit this program," Foster said. "I'm excited about the group I have over here & I'm confident we can win right now." The Purple Knights will take on 5A powerhouse Zachary week one to kickoff the season & then they'll start catholic league play next week against John Curtis. "One thing I learned over the years is if you want your program to get to a certain standard, you can't shy away from the best teams in the state," Foster said. "I'll play anybody anywhere because that's what good programs believe in. Competing in the catholic league is going to be real competitive, but that's what we want. As a competitor you shouldn't want things to be easy & that's something I've been instilling in my kids since I took this job." Byron Turner Jr. will play a huge role at defensive end. At 6-3, 235 pounds, Turner collected numerous offers from power five schools and committed to FSU in August. Also on the defensive side of the ball, Edward Gilds and Lucius Tillery will play the secondary as the cornerbacks. Gilds is listed 5-10, 185 pounds, and has recently committed to McNeese State. Tillery has received college interest from Lamar University and New Mexico State. Kendell Sampson Jr. will be under center for the Purple Knights again this season. The talented senior quarterback showed impressive arm strength at practice and has the weapons around him to compete for a win every week Among those weapons, will be running back Shan Brooks Jr., receiver Tylie Keasley, and receiver Javen Nicholas. Despite experiencing a highly successful regular season and losing a heartbreaker by one point to Rummel last season, the Purple Knights have higher hopes than a first-round exit this year. Combine the coaching staff and the roster, the Purple Knights will certainly be in the mix come playoff time. |
