8th Grader’s Kick Lifts Covenant Christian Over Undefeated Jeanerette in Double Overtime Thriller10/27/2025 Jeanerette — Under the Friday night lights, a middle schooler became the hero. Eighth-grade kicker Ben Trosclair drilled a 22-yard field goal in double overtime to give Covenant Christian Academy a dramatic 21–18 win over previously unbeaten Jeanerette in front of a roaring home crowd. It was a gritty, emotional victory for the Lions, who improved to 6–2 on the season while handing the Tigers their first loss (7–1). “This team never stopped believing,” said CCA head coach Jesse Turner. “We faced adversity all night, but our guys played with heart — and an eighth grader stepped up when it mattered most.” Covenant Christian started fast behind quarterback Owen Trosclair, who connected with Richard Horn on a 13-yard touchdown strike midway through the first quarter. The younger Trosclair then added a 32-yard field goal to give the Lions a 10–0 lead late in the first. But Jeanerette, a powerhouse known for explosive plays, clawed back. A botched snap on a CCA punt rolled into the end zone for a safety, trimming the lead to 10–2 early in the second. Moments later, running back Destin Smith broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run, and after a successful two-point conversion, the Tigers tied the game 10–10 with just over ten minutes to play in the half. Jeanerette’s defense seized momentum when defensive back Nysir Jackson intercepted a pass, setting up another scoring drive. Smith struck again — this time from 25 yards out — to give Jeanerette an 18–10 lead with 2:33 left before halftime. CCA defensive back Patrick Williams picked off a pass before the break to halt another Tigers drive, keeping the Lions within striking distance. In the third quarter, the Lions showed their resilience. Facing fourth down deep in Jeanerette territory, Owen Trosclair broke a tackle and powered into the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown run. His two-point conversion tied the game 18–18 with 1:33 left in the third. The fourth quarter was a battle of nerves. Covenant Christian’s fake punt attempt was stopped with just over a minute remaining, giving Jeanerette a chance to steal the game. But the Lions’ defense rose to the occasion — linebacker Madix Latiolais intercepted a pass with 11 seconds left to send it to overtime. After a scoreless first OT, both teams traded defensive stops in the second. Williams picked off his second pass of the night, setting the stage for the biggest kick of young Ben Trosclair’s life. Calm under pressure, the eighth grader split the uprights from 22 yards out — and the Lions’ sideline erupted in celebration. With the win, Covenant Christian not only snapped Jeanerette’s undefeated streak but also showed they can hang with anyone in Class 1A. “That’s what high school football is all about — heart, belief, and moments like this,” Coach Turner said. “I couldn’t be prouder.” Final: Covenant Christian 21, Jeanerette 18 (2OT) Records: CCA (6–2), Jeanerette (7–1) Full highlights & interviews below!!
